Your cosplay is pretty dang awesome :) ! As someone who has never done it before but wanting to get into it, do you have any tips or suggestions on how to get into it? I was thinking of being the Eleventh Doctor, but like, I'm not good at crafts at all :/ You are so awesome!
Oh wow djkfhgkj. First of all, dear anon, thank you very much! I’m not really terribly awesome…there are a lot better cosplayers out there than me, but I try my best and have fun doing it!
That’s my first bit of advice, really. Have FUN with your cosplay! As long as you enjoy yourself while doing it, nothing anyone thinks or says should matter. :D
Second, and this is especially true for Doctor Who cosplayers, THRIFT STORES ARE YOUR FRIEND. Obviously, if you’re going for 100% screen accuracy, you’ll want to make things yourself or search for exact brands and articles of clothing on sites like Ebay. But for most cosplayers (including myself) and definitely for someone just getting started, digging around at your local Goodwill or consignment shop is a great way to find costume pieces! I always joke to those wanting to cosplay from Doctor Who that, if you roll around in a thrift store long enough, you’ll come out looking like someone. :D
The other major resource to consider is your own closet! (or your parents’s closet or your siblings…) There are probably some basic items you already own that could be used for any number of costumes!
To prove those points, here are the breakdowns of my current Doctor Who cosplays:
My Eleventh Doctor - thrifted the jacket and shirt, got the fez from a friend, found the bowtie and suspenders on Amazon for less than $10, already owned the skirt and boots.
My Fourth Doctor - thrifted the jacket, skirt, and (current) hat, already owned the shirt and boots, made the scarf, bought the TARDIS key at a convention.
Romana I - bought the skirt on Ebay, bought the shirt from Delia’s and dyed and modded it, found the petticoat at a thrift shop, already owned the boots I’m currently using.
TARDIS dress - entirely hand made (with help from a friend’s mom! It was my first major project!)
Clara from The Name of the Doctor (in progress) - dress will be hand made, shoes I already own, shirt to go under the dress I already own, props (leaf, whisk) I already own.
As you can see, the only thing I made entirely from scratch was the TARDIS dress.
Basically, the whole point of cosplay is getting creative! :D
So, getting more to the point of your costume…for Eleven, I definitely recommend going to a thrift store. If you’re patient (it might take multiple stores and multiple trips) you’ll almost certainly be able to find a suitable tweed jacket (or purple jacket, if you’re going with the new Series 7 costume) and a button down shirt. For pants, you can definitely get away with dark skinny jeans (that’s what I wear with mine when it’s cold and/or I don’t feel like “hardcore” dressing up) though, especially this time of year, skinny black or dark blue pants shouldn’t be too hard to find at any clothing store. If you’re going for a more “girly” fem version you’ll probably want to find a dark blue/black skirt (just remember that when you attach suspenders to it, it’s going to ride up! Make sure it’s long enough!). The suspenders and bowtie are easy. Amazon has zillions of them for very low prices! (hint: searching for “burgundy” bow ties and suspenders will get you a color closer to what he wears on the show) Boots can get a little tricky….I only know one person who has super accurate Eleven boots (*stares at hobbitbutt in awe*). Finding boots exactly like Matt wears on-screen will almost certainly be pretty expensive. Luckily, ankle boots are pretty “in style” right now, so you’ll probably be able to find a black pair that will give your outfit the right kind of feel. Props are, well, slightly trickier than clothing in some ways. You’ll probably want a fez (though I didn’t have one for a long time!) and you can acquire one of those on numerous websites or even in stores, but it might be sort of impossible to find one that is the right height and shade of red. A mop is another popular prop choice…but you’ve got to consider where you’ll have to carry it around! And, of course, a sonic screwdriver is more or less essential…and if you don’t already have one of those, it’s going to set you back about $30. No way around it. :/ (I still don’t have an Eleven sonic! I use my roommate’s.)
On the subject of props, the final tip I have is to think of unique items to have with you! I never cosplay a Doctor (or the TARDIS) without a key, my Four has a yellow yoyo, and my TARDIS dress always has a tiny laminated Tenth Doctor in its pocket! ALSO, if possible, cosplay with snacks. :D When I bring Eleven to a con, I always try to remember to grab a pack of Jammie Dodgers. Same with the Jelly Babies when I’m four…and when I finally get around to making my dream Ten cosplay, I’ll be sure to always bring a banana or two!
BUT REALLY, ABOVE ALL, HAVE FUN!!! <3 <3 if you have any other questions feel free to ask!! Thank you so much again for this lovely message! :D
My wig caps are all in my apartment so oooooops sorry it looks hideous, also I didn’t take any of my jewelry off….and I didn’t do any cosplay makeup….and I’m not wearing my glasses because they’re getting new lenses put in them right now…and I still need to get a purple contact and a better tie….
BUT HERE HAVE SOME PHOTOS OF ME GOOFING AROUND AS CECIL.
Today was a good day in the land of working on my Cecil cosplay.
I found the PERFECT shirt at the thrift store (it’s way more purple in person I swear) and a nice black vest.
AND AND the headphones were less than $12 at FYE. And they even sound great and have a mic in them.
Boston Comic Con 2013 - Part 1
It was a strange little con…but I loved it.
Well, I’ll hazard I can do more damage on my laptop sitting in my pajamas before my first cup of Earl Grey than you can do in a year in the field.
I found a Q mug in our cabinets. It’s bedtime. I was wearing pajamas. I wear black glasses. I have dark curly hair. I have a laptop and I wanted tea.
So I did a thing.
And it’s stupid.
I’m sorry. XD
